They're Applying in America What They Did to Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and defining occasions – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of a few weeks, the US president began displaying all observers his plans for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions compared to the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to erect it.

He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of casualties resulting from his reductions to international aid is 600,000 and growing, and this week research forecast his petroleum strategies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have attempted – really, no other president would have contemplated – solo demolishing large sections of the White House to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of numerous the richest Americans, the majority of whom have business with the government.

We moved from 'the meek shall inherit the world' into 'the meek shall die of cholera'

As bewildering as it is to witness the chief executive try to upend the traditional concept about democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have observed across decades as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we were raised with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Essentially, they converted a persona of affection into a symbol of animosity who endorses exactly the harshness that he condemned in the Gospel; this change developed more slowly, over decades instead of months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.

A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground

So let me first describe the Savior that I grew up with, since in theory Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and since the quickly increasing segment within America may possess limited understanding about him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or nones. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; but I do think that exist valuable insights of significant worth in biblical accounts.

It is emphatically not the story of a powerful ruler appearing; conversely, an infant arrives to homeless parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to evade undercover officers. The infant develops in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his message concerns compassion for others, specifically for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and sheltering. Jesus' answer to violence is to present the additional cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a means to educate the assailant; his crime policy is that if someone steals your jacket you should give him your sweater also.

The apparent and straightforward fact that the Jesus from scripture calls for a kind of extreme compassion focused on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christianity somewhat of a scandalous religion: attractive to the general public, but because of its inherent radicalness needing to be controlled. In the fifties it was controlled via weakening – Protestantism was so dominant that it basically blessed current circumstances.

A Battle for the Best Within Us

Hence I have become inspired to observe the persistent defiance against Trump emerge during the previous year. It has been substantial consolation to assist in constructing the movement that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged electorate to turn out in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners throughout each rally and requests to the highest qualities in US history.

We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you receive him and embrace them or refuse?

The country is optimally secured, essentially, by relationship to the best in US heritage, just as Christianity is most protected through connection to that which renders it unique and wonderful, specifically the model of Christ. In both situations does it imply acting as if the most negative about the nation and religious tradition was nonexistent; it represents both meekness and conviction, a blend that genuine national faithful ought to accept.
