Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in the WACA.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.
"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, aside from his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.
He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Backup Options
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
